The Marathi film industry seems reluctant to move beyond the influence of the acclaimed film "Sairat," resulting in a proliferation of formulaic love stories. For every unique production, there are several films adhering to this formula, likely in hopes of replicating the success of Nagraj Manjule’s masterpiece. "Lagan" is a recent example of this trend.
While "Lagan" attempts to delve into the theme of love transcending societal barriers through the romance between Ajya (Sujit Choure) and Rajnandini (Shweta Kale), it introduces its own twists and turns. Ajya's mother (Smita Tambe) advocates for his education and a secure government job, believing it essential for progress in life. However, unforeseen events disrupt their plans.
Despite its attempts at originality, "Lagan" offers little novelty in its storyline. One might anticipate the actors infusing depth into the narrative, but they fall short in doing so. Smita Tambe and Anil Nagarkar deliver sincere performances, but the lead pair lacks refinement. Furthermore, the predictability of the plot leaves the viewer wanting more.
While "Lagan" presents opportunities for improvement, enthusiasts of similar films may find some enjoyment in it, albeit at their own risk.
