Review: Mollywood exhibits a notable fondness for police procedural dramas, and while our films once centered around senior officers solving cases, there is now a shift towards portraying the frontline officers in action. It's captivating to witness narratives showcasing the efforts and challenges faced by lower-ranked policemen.
"Kannur Squad" revolves around a specialized four-member police investigation team led by ASI George, portrayed by Mammootty. Despite their dedication to the job, the squad faces internal resentment within police stations due to the liberties they enjoy. A corruption accusation against a team member leads to the disbandment of the squad. However, when a high-profile murder and robbery occur at a politician's house in Kasargod, George is tasked with reuniting the team to apprehend the culprits.
The investigation takes them to North India, causing unrest in Kerala's political landscape. Doubts surface about the team's competence and reputation, but George remains determined to bring the criminals to justice despite numerous obstacles.
Co-scripted by Muhammed Shafi and actor Rony David Raj, and directed by cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj, the film draws parallels with Rajeev Ravi's "Kuttavum Shikshayum," especially when the team ventures into UP's Tikri village to track down key leads. The film's strength lies in its fast-paced second half, although a tighter script, especially before the interval, would have enhanced the overall experience.
Mammootty's undeniable star power shines through with impactful dialogues, while other actors like Rony, Azeez Nedumangad, and Shabareesh Varma have well-developed backstories that add depth to their characters. Ankith Madhav impressively portrays a UP constable who becomes an integral part of the team, guiding them through the challenging terrains of North India. The inclusion of fresh talents like him and Deepak Parambol is a positive aspect for the industry.
On the downside, there are moments of graphic violence that could have been omitted. Muhammed Rahil's cinematography stands out, skillfully capturing both intense moments in confined spaces and the grandeur of landscapes. For this reason alone, the film is worth watching in theaters.
