ayalaan (tamil) Review
Ayalaan Movie Synopsis: A benevolent young man must join forces with an extraterrestrial being to thwart the nefarious plans of an industrialist, whose project poses a grave threat to the planet's survival.
Ayalaan Movie Review: Director Ravikumar, known for infusing local flavor into high-concept narratives like time travel in "Indru Netru Naalai," applies a similar approach in Ayalaan. The film presents a sci-fi premise of aliens on Earth within the framework of Tamil cinema. Familiar Tamil cinema tropes such as hero introduction songs, romance, comedic sidekicks, a corporate antagonist portrayed by a northern actor (here, Sharad Kelkar), touches of maternal sentiment, and even advocacy for organic farming are seamlessly integrated. Despite organic farming messages being associated with big-hero films of the past decade, they feel relevant within the context of the film's overarching theme of environmental preservation.
Ravikumar's innovative twists on conventional Hollywood concepts like superpowers, UFOs, extraterrestrial beings, powerful robots, femme fatales, and large-scale destruction make Ayalaan an engaging watch for audiences of all ages. In the first half, the alien character, Tattoo, is portrayed like a charming cartoon figure, eliciting wonder and laughter, which appeals to both children and adults alike. The seamless integration of visual effects enhances the storytelling, effectively bringing back characters and elements introduced earlier to advance the narrative in the second half.
However, Ayalaan is not without its flaws. The transitions between scenes are not always smooth, the villain lacks sufficient menace, and certain moments in the second half, such as a highway chase sequence (accompanied by a somewhat generic score from AR Rahman) and the climax, could have been more impactful. Nevertheless, the film manages to redeem itself with moments of excitement that overshadow its shortcomings.
